MILLBURY Warren S. Catherwood, 80, of 10 President Rd., died Wednesday, March 24th, after a long illness.
His wife, Ruby M. (Underwood) Catherwood died in 1988. He leaves a son, Warren S. Catherwood Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Millbury; four daughters, Doreen M. Josephsen of Goose Creek S.C., Deborah M. Padeni of Charlton, Amy L. Brote of Florida, and Patricia M. Motes of Raymond, N.H.; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a long time friend, Lorraine St.George of Lynnfield. He graduated from Blessed Sacrament School, Commerce High School and New England School of Accounting, all in Worcester.
Mr. Catherwood worked as a postal clerk for 32 years at the Worcester Post Office, retired in 1985. He was a Army veteran of WW II and landed on Omaha Beach with the 29th Division. Then with the 9th Division 47th infantry he was wounded in the Hurtgen Forest and again later at the Remagen Brigdehead. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart with first Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, European-Africian-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the distinguished Unit Emblem and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was member and former Chaplain of the American Legion Post #3 in Woonsocket, R.I., a member of a Veteran of Foreign Wars Post in Worcester and a member of the Pope John XXIII Council Knights of Columbus in Worcester. He was a member and lector of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and he was treasurer of the St. Vincent DePaul Society of the Church..
His funeral will be held Monday March 29th from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St., Worcester Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 28th, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UMASS Memorial Hospice, UMASS Memorial, Foundation P.O. Box 2795, Worcester, Mass. 01613-0038.
